SLC, Swiss Language Club

SLC has over 25 years experience in organising summer language camps in Switzerland combining an excellent language education with a wide range of leisure, sports and sightseeing activities.

In 2009 we offer high quality summer programmes, headed by a highly motivated and experienced team in our two newly renovated course centres in Leysin and Montreux.

Here we combine intensive language lessons in the morning with a varied sports, leisure and excursion programme in the afternoon and evening.

The Leysin location, half an hour away from Lake Geneva, is suitable for participants from 10 to 17 years of age.

Our Montreux centre caters to more mature participants of 14 to 18 years of age.

Both centres offer the option to study either English or French. German is also offered in our Leysin centre.

The SLC “Hot Sports Card” allows our students to participate in a variety of sports and leisure activities and additional excursions. The pass – with a weekly bonus of CHF 40 – is already included in the course fee.

In addition to the full-day Saturday excursion and the two weekly half-day excursions we offer one admission every second week to the Aquaparc in Le Bouveret on the shores of Lake Geneva (see pages 10-11).

Renovated in 2005-2007, both course centres have excellent infrastructures with modern classrooms, nice double and single guest rooms and a large variety of leisure facilities.

Both course centres have also gained a reputation for their excellent catering since their re-opening. A team of professional cooks prepares three buffets (breakfast, lunch and dinner) from Monday to Friday, brunch and dinner on the weekends. Barbecues or special theme nights offer even more diversity. All meals are included in the course fees.

10 Good REASONS FoR SLC

1. Language classes

Our dynamic teaching team aims to make learning an enjoyable experience. The lessons are intensive, yet delivered in a relaxed and diversified atmosphere. This approach permits excellent learning results even though the time of stay may be short.

If you want to discover the “Magic of the Swiss Mountains” or enjoy the “Swiss Riviera” and Lake Geneva – the choice is yours as we offer both: Leysin is suitable for youth from 10 - 17 years, Montreux for participants from 14 - 18 years.

The intensive morning classes call for relaxation and recreation in the afternoon. If you’re interested in sports and physical exercise or prefer to take it easy, there are plenty of possibilities in Leysin and Montreux.

4. The SLC “Hot Sports” Card

The SLC “Hot Sports” Card gives you a weekly bonus of CHF 40.- to use on any sports and leisure activities or for additional excursions.

5. Aquaparc

In 2009 we offer a free admittance every second week to the Aquaparc in Le Bouveret on the shore of Lake Geneva.

6. New infrastructure

The Leysin campus has an impressive infrastructure with modern classrooms, internet cafes, learning lounges, coffee shops and restaurants, gym, aerobics hall, sun deck and a lot more.

The campus in Montreux was completely renovated in 2005-07 and offers excellent facilities. Great importance is also attached to the safety of our guests: all buildings comply with legal specifications and rules and our well-trained staff is available ‘round the clock.

7. Choice of accommodation

The course fees include accommodation in double standard rooms. If you prefer to stay in a single or deluxe room, a surcharge applies (see price list). The rooms are cleaned weekly by our housekeeping department and at the same time bed linen and towels are changed.

8. Great food

Our team of professional cooks prepares a fresh breakfast, lunch and dinner buffet every day. Barbecues and special theme parties offer even more diversity.

9. A surprisingly low price

Because the infrastructure is used by hotel management schools during the rest of the year, we are able to offer high quality summer programmes for a surprisingly low price.

During the past 25 years, thousands of students have participated in one of our language camps. Their comments and feedback together with our innovative management have inspired us to review the traditional summer school and design a new summer camp concept adapted to the changing needs of teenagers and young adults.

The LaNguage Classes

Learning a language is fun! if you haven’t discovered this yet, you will during your stay at SLC.

Our teachers are well qualified and experienced. Classes are conducted in classrooms, in the gardens, on the panorama terrace and even on field trips.

The lessons

From day one you’ll feel inspired by the motivating atmosphere. Ideal requirements to achieve a maximum learning success!

Class levels

On the first day all participants (except the absolute beginners) take a placement test to be allotted to an appropriate class. If necessary, the class can be changed after consultation with the teacher within the first two days.

Teachers

Our dynamic team of lecturers creates interesting and active lessons. The units have clear structures and are taught in a relaxing environment.

Class times

Classes are conducted in the morning from Monday to Friday: 4 lessons per day, 20 lessons per week.

Extra conversation classes

Participants with a minimum of two years experience can additionally take two lessons of conversation class two afternoons per week (see price list).

Learning methods

Our teachers work with flexible curricula. Thereby they are able to adapt to the specific level and needs of the group and create diversified lessons.

Small classes (appr. 12 - 13 students) allow a lot of personal attention to each student.

Where appropriate to the class level the teachers will also use media such as short movies, newspaper articles and role-plays.

Learning infrastructure

The study centres in Leysin and Montreux comprise of brand new and modern learning infrastructures. The classrooms have been newly renovated and feature white boards as well as multimedia projectors and TV/video. Our learning lounges are the perfect place for homework and group work.

Learning success

Your stay at SLC will in any case contribute to improve your language knowledge. How much you improve will of course also depend upon your commitment and motivation. Our club atmosphere will however, make it easy for you to learn with pleasure.

Certificate

At the end of your stay you will be presented with a certificate which documents the graduation from your SLC course. The certificate will also be a nice memory of your stay in western Switzerland.

More than 25 years of experience in organising summer holiday camps for teenagers and young adults have taught us the right “mix” of intensive language education and an active leisure programme.

Our packed sports, leisure, and excursion programme is great for recreation and variety and will offer plenty of opportunity to make new friends from all over the world.

Sports

Sports enthusiasts will really get their moneys worth in our study centre in Leysin. with its excellent infrastructure, the youth holiday-village of Leysin offers a wide range of sports activities. nearby Lake Geneva provides additional water sports possibilities (see page 10-11).

In case you are less interested in sports, you’ll be thrilled by our other leisure activities. Please find some of the activities offered in the chart on the right.

“Juniors’ Club”

Participants 10 to 13 years old receive in our “Juniors’ Club” in Leysin additional supervision. They can however participate in all listed activities.

Parties

Our popular SLC parties are organized every Saturday evening. Together with the students, the Leisure Managers also organize special theme nights.

Immensely popular with our students is the “Aquaparc” in Le bouveret on the shore of Lake Geneva - a water park with unique attractions.

In 2009 we offer a free admittance to the Aquaparc every second week for all our students in both centres, Leysin and Montreux.

Should you feel less excited about water attractions like slides, fountains, bubble and wave pools, you can also go for the “Bouveret Plage” nearby and check out water sports activities like water skiing and banana boat or simply go for a swim or sun bath.

Fees for these additional activities (water skiing, banana boat) can be covered with the “Hot Sports Card”.

EXCURSIONS

Discover the “Suisse Romande”! Every week you can go on two half-day excursions plus an all-day Saturday excursion, all of which are included in the course fees. For even more trips you can use your “Hot Sports Card”.

With this kind of diversity you’ll surely not get bored during your stay in western Switzerland.

Saturday excursion

The Saturday excursions are included in the course fees. Destinations vary depending upon the study centre. To the right you can find a sample of a Saturday excursion for our centre in Leysin.

Afternoon excursion

Every week students can participate on a free trip by coach to destinations in the region. There is a large choice of destinations ranging from shopping trips in Vevey and Lausanne to sightseeing trips or a ride in a cable car.

On a second afternoon we invite all participants to join us on a fun trip to the Aquaparc or Bellerive Beach in Le Bouveret (see pages 10-11).

Additional Excursions

If you’d like to participate in additional excursions, you can use the credits of your “Hot Sports Card”.

Fun Planet

Another big hit with our students is “Fun Planet”, an entertainment park in nearby Villeneuve. Participants can use their credits on the “Hot Sports Card” to pay for activities like go-karting, bowling, arcade games, simulators, wall climbing and a variety of live entertainment.

MEAls

An active lifestyle demands a healthy, balanced selection of foods.

Our chefs have years of experience in preparing meals for the demands of young people and offer a balanced and diversified daily menu.

Monday – Friday

Three meals daily will be offered from Monday to Friday: breakfast, lunch and dinner. All meals are offered buffet-style and you are free to refill your plate.

Usually there will be a selection of various salads, main courses, desserts, fruit and drinks offered.

Saturday and Sunday

The days to sleep late! Breakfast and lunch will be contracted into one single meal, our popular and abundant brunch buffet.

After your return from the daily excursions and activities, a hearty dinner will be waiting in the cafeteria.

“Theme nights”

Every now and again our chefs surprise their guests with a “theme night”: an Asian buffet, a Mexican dinner, “La Soirée Française”, the “Burger & Nuggets” night – you can be sure it’s going to be good!

The Cafeterias

The “Lake Side” and “Garden Café” buffet restaurants on the Montreux campus have been renovated in 2006/07 and are open daily for warm meals.

In Leysin, all meals will be served on campus in the “Market Place” or “Sitjo”. Both cafeterias were renovated and refurbished recently and offer places for 150 guests. If necessary, the adjoining French restaurant with an additional 60 places can be opened too.

Even more variety is on its way when our chefs organize their garden barbecues: a large choice of grilled meats and sausages and a fresh salad buffet followed by a dessert buffet and fresh fruit.

lEysin

Leysin is a renowned youth holiday village in the Vaud Alps, approximately 40 minutes away from Montreux and Lake Geneva.

The active, dynamic atmosphere of Leysin with its many sports and leisure possibilities is surely a reason why it is home to so many international schools and universities.

The Study Centre

The SLC courses are conducted in the two previous hotels “Mont Blanc Palace” and “Bélvedère”. Both hotels were owned by Club Med until 2001 and then taken over and completely renovated by SeG, Swiss Education Group, in 2004.

The village centre of Leysin and the public sport facilities are easily accessible by foot – or with the complimentary public bus – in just a few minutes.

SLC Leisure Manager

The SLC Leisure Managers in Leysin know the area very well with all its attractions and sights. They organise excursions and activities that you will never forget and also ensure that our in-house facilities are always available during opening hours.

Whether it is a discovery trip with the cable car to a nearby mountain lake, or a sunset BBQ overlooking Lake Geneva, a party in our Club Maxx! disco or simply a challenging aerobics class: the SLC Leisure Manager always finds a way to add to the enjoyment of your stay.

Montreux – a city in possibly the most beautiful region of Switzerland, the “Riviera”. Well-known for its mild climate, the city is the home of 12 international schools.

The famous “Quai des Fleurs”, with its cosy garden cafes and shopping possibilities, is an always-open invitation for a relaxing afternoon or evening near the lake. Enjoy the international atmosphere - particularly during the jazz festival with its countless street musicians. but Montreux has plenty to offer at all times of the year and is visited by thousands of tourists annually.

Our school in Montreux was renovated in 2004/07 and features high quality facilities.
